Where is Newport Pagnell?

Newport Pagnell is a town in the Borough of Milton Keynes. It is separated by the M1 motorway from Milton Keynes itself, though part of the same urban area. Newport Pagnell services on the M1 are named after the town.

Newport Pagnell History

Newport Pagnell was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Neuport, which is the Old English for 'New Market Town', but by that time, the old Anglo-Saxon town had become dominated by the Norman invaders. The suffix 'Pagnell' came later when the local manor passed into the hands of the Pagnell family. It was the principal town of the "Three Hundreds of Newport", a district that had almost the same boundary as the modern City of Milton Keynes. A hundred is an administrative division that is geographically part of a larger region.

Newport Pagnell and the rule of law

At one time, Newport Pagnell was one of the largest towns in the County of Buckinghamshire, with the assizes of the County occasionally held there. The courts of assize, or assizes, were periodic courts held around England and Wales until 1972, when together with the quarter sessions they were abolished by the Courts Act 1971 and replaced by a single permanent Crown Court. The assizes exercised both civil and criminal jurisdiction, though most of their work was on the criminal side. The assizes heard the most serious cases, which were committed to it by the quarter sessions, so named because local county courts held sittings four times per year, while the more minor offences were dealt with summarily by justices of the peace in petty sessions, also known as magistrates' courts.

The word assize refers to the sittings or sessions of the judges, known as justices of assize, who were judges who travelled across the seven circuits of England and Wales, setting up court and summoning juries at the various assize towns.

The assize courts have been responsible for setting countless precedents throughout the history of the English Legal System. Many of these legal precedents remain good law today. Although the language is quite archaic, the legal principles set out all those years ago remain entrenched in the law of the land.

Newport Pagnell today, despite its own substantial expansion, it has been completely dwarfed by the growth of Milton Keynes. There were also at one time two hospitals in Newport Pagnell, and six fairs were held for the local population throughout the year. The 1841 census returned a population of 3,569, meaning that Newport Pagnell was quite a sizeable town at that time.

A rare cast iron bridge in Newport Pagnell

There is a Grade I listed bridge, over the river in Newport Pagnell that was built in 1810. It is one of just a few cast iron bridges in Britain that still carry modern road traffic. Near the footbridge at the side, there is a plaque placed by Newport Pagnell Historical Society that gives details of its history and construction. The River Ouzel joins the Great Ouse nearby, and a large set of sluice gates, used to control downstream flooding, is located near the bridge.

From canal to railway in Newport Pagnell

Between 1817 and 1864, Newport Pagnell was linked to the Grand Junction Canal at Great Linford via the Newport Pagnell Canal. In 1862, the canal owners sold the route to the London and Northwestern Railway. For one hundred years, from1867 to 1967, Newport Pagnell was served by Newport Pagnell railway station, the terminus on the Wolverton to Newport Pagnell branch line.

The legendary Aston Martin brand and Newport Pagnell

From 1954 until 2007, Newport Pagnell was the home to the sports car that has become a staple for successive 007 characters, the Aston Martin. In the end, the Newport Pagnell car factory was outdated, and a new production facility was built near Gaydon in Warwickshire. There is still a service facility for Aston Martin in Newport Pagnell, but the factory on the north side of the town has since been demolished apart from the engine shop, board room and offices that are protected as they are listed buildings. The land behind these has been developed by a housing developer. The buildings at the front, including the house used as a board room, have been restored and will be used as commercial sites. In 2012, Aston Martin completely modernised the service facility and the site also houses a bespoke sales department.

The last Vellum manufacturer in the country in Newport Pagnell

Newport Pagnell houses the only remaining vellum manufacturer in the United Kingdom, William Cowley, located at Parchment Works, 97 Caldecote Street. Vellum is prepared animal skin or membrane, typically used as writing material. Parchment is another term for this material, and if vellum is distinguished from this, it is by its being made from calfskin, as opposed to that from other animals, or otherwise being of higher quality. Vellum is prepared for writing or printing on, to produce single pages, scrolls, codices, or books.

Business opportunities increase in Newport Pagnell

In more recent times, Newport Pagnell has attracted a considerable amount of investment, thus an upsurge of economic growth, due to being within the seemingly ever-expanding Milton Keynes. This has led to quite a few new housing developments in and around the Newport Pagnell area.

A hygienic splashback in Newport Pagnell

One of the main reasons why so many people are now opting for a toughened glass splashback, is because they are so hygienic. Glass is nonporous and will therefore not harbour bacteria anywhere on its surface, so it remains clinically clean.

The lack of grout and joins in glass splashbacks also make this type of covering particularly easy to keep clean. Nobody likes using harsh chemicals and scrubbing to keep their walls clean and with a toughened glass splashback from Splashbacks of Distinction, you don't have to do this anymore.

The ability to keep your surfaces clinically clean has become more important in recent times, particularly in and around areas that are used for food preparation and washing. The Covid 19 pandemic has seen many people rethink the way they clean their surroundings. Whereas we always used to clean, now we feel the need to sanitise, and glass makes this higher level of cleanliness possible.

Splashbacks of Distinction are available to visit your Newport Pagnell home to measure up and fit a quality glass splashback or one of our other toughened glass products. Glass is such a clean and modern medium for your home, and you'd be surprised just how much glass can transform your Newport Pagnell home.

Our range of toughened glass products extend much further than our splashbacks though. There are several ways that glass can make your home sparkle and stay hygienically clean at the same time.
