We would all like a new fitted kitchen! It's that time of year when we start to take stock and notice all those little jobs that need doing around the home. The kitchen is the one room in any home that is used on a regular basis and the one that probably takes the most punishment. Heat, grease and grime build up without even the cleanest of cooks noticing. The worktops, walls and ceilings start to lose there clean look and become dull and dirty. It's not until you thoroughly clean an area that you really notice just how grimy your kitchen has become. Now could be the perfect time to consider doing something about it.
A new fitted kitchen can set you back a small fortune, so you will need to consider the cost implications of getting the kitchen of your dreams. We often visit clients to quote for a new fitted toughened glass kitchen splashback only to discover that they are waiting to have a new kitchen fitted first. All too often, the kitchen that is to be replaced is in a very good condition and has many more years of service left in it. The reason the client has chosen to invest in a new fitted kitchen is simply because the old tiles that form the splashback behind the cooker or on the walls below the kitchen units is old and out of date.
The last splashback quote we offered a client was to go behind the cooker and between the kitchen units and the worktop on the main work surface area. The kitchen units looked clean, modern and in very good shape. It turned out that the kitchen had only been fitted a little over five years before. The only thing that looked aged and out of place in this kitchen were the tiled splashbacks.
The tiles were cracked in places, the grouting was very yellow and the pattern on the tiles was pretty awful. Apart from that, the kitchen looked like it had only been fitted a few weeks before. The kitchen unit sides and doors were clean and grease free, the worktop was a very expensive Corian material and even the floor was on the expensive side. So why were they having all this ripped out to make way for another kitchen? Simple, in their eyes the tiled splashbacks made the rest of the kitchen look dated, dirty and boring
The clients were very happy with our quote and we discussed the correct dimensions of the glass splashbacks with the company who had been employed to fit the new kitchen. The kitchen company fitter was rubbing his hands together as he revealed that he had every intention of making use of the old kitchen to replace his own, it really was that good!
In order for the clients to bring there kitchen back to life, all they really needed was a new glass splashback to replace those tired old tiles. After all, they did mention that they still liked the old kitchen. This does seem to happen quite a lot though and people frequently invest in a high quality kitchen, but give very little thought to the quality, durability or appearance of the splashback materials they have. As the old saying goes, 'don't spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar'.
It's true that there are some pretty nice tile designs around and some can really make your kitchen look amazing, however there are certain drawbacks. Ceramic tiles are quite durable, but only if you invest in the highest quality ones available. The cheaper ones are prone to cracking or have pitting in the glazed finish that will be a haven for bacteria. No matter how careful you are, the grouting is always rough to the touch. This will mean that your entire tiled surface will be a magnet for bacteria and stains. Sure, you can seal the grout but the seal will not stand up to years of grease, heat and grime.
When you consider that we prepare all our food in the kitchen environment, it makes no sense whatsoever to have surfaces that promote the growth of bacteria. Recent studies have shown that many everyday items will have significantly more bacteria than a toilet seat, below are just a few:
The shocking facts above really do make you wonder just how much bacteria is lurking on all those tiled kitchen surfaces doesn't it? A toughened glass splashback is supremely smooth and clinically hygienic. This is one of the reasons why many hospitals are switching their surgical operating theatres to glass surfaces rather than sticking with the old stainless steel surfaces that have been around for years.
Unlike the old grouted tiles, our toughened glass kitchen splashbacks are virtually seamless. Even the cutouts for electrical sockets are so precise that you'll barely notice them. The cleaning of glass splashbacks couldn't be easier either. A quick spray of anti bacterial solution and a wipe over with a clean disposable paper towel and you're good to go. As the splashback is made from toughened glass you can go to town with a steam cleaner too. Sterilise to your hearts content, knowing that you and your family are going to be eating food that has been prepared in a much cleaner and healthier environment.
So if you find that your old tiled splashback has seen better days, take a very careful look at the rest of the kitchen, you may not need to replace the whole thing after all. A toughened glass splashback from Splashbacks of Distinction could well give your old kitchen a new lease of life and potentially save you from shelling out thousands of pounds you don't need to.
We all get to a point when we suddenly become aware that our home or garden are looking quite dated. This often happens after we have been to a friends house who have opted for the light airy look and feel that glass furnishings can deliver. We then start to compare our property with theirs and yearn for a change for the better.

Put simply, a glass splashback is very smooth and hygienic, making them a far superior alternative to traditional tiles. Even though the majority of tiles are glazed to a glass like finish, the grout lines are a major pain to keep clean and will discolour badly in a relatively short period of time.

Years ago you had the bewildering array of tiles of different sizes, shapes, colours and textures. The one thing that all tiles have in common is that they all need to be grouted onto the wall. This grout can look untidy unless you have the tiles fitted by a professional and they are a magnet for harmful bacteria.

We all get bored with the decor in our house from time to time and start to consider what we can do to freshen things up. Often this is all we end up doing, a quick lick of paint here and there to make the room look a little cleaner, but frequently, the colour we use is the same as before, so the novelty of a freshly decorated room will be rather short lived.

People have always had an intense interest in glass. Glass for the table, glass for the windows and even glass for some ornaments, but glass for a wider range of uses around the home or office, surely not!
The marked increase in interest of glass around the home seems to have started back in 1949, when the 'The Glass House' or 'Johnson house' was built in Connecticut, USA. It was designed by Philip Johnson as his own weekend residence and was made predominantly of toughened glass. It has been said that in a house of glass, the views of the landscape are its wallpaper.

We all want our homes to have a unique appearance, because nobody wants their living space to be exactly the same as their friends and neighbours. Sadly this is easier said than done! Think about it, the majority of your friends and neighbours will buy their furniture from the local furniture store and the wallpaper, lamps and flooring are likely to be sourced from the same local DIY shop that you use. This is not to say they will choose exactly the same decor as you, but the chances of it happening are pretty good. So if you want something really different, think glass!

Glass has held a fascination for so many people over the centuries. No other material allows such a wide variety of products to be made that actually appear to change depending on the intensity of the light that shines upon it.
Glass really is an eyecatching medium, and at the same time it is a very functional material to be used as a splashback in the kitchen, bathroom or to highlight a display somewhere else in the home or office. Glass is naturally a very hygenic material as it is not porous so no bacteria can be left on its surface once properly cleaned. But why stop in the kitchen though, the bathroom is another part of the home that can easily be enhanced, come to think of it, anywhere you want colour, design and an easy clean surface can benefit from a toughened glass splashback.

Toughened glass, as its name would suggest, is glass material that has been made much tougher than ordinary glass. Toughened glass are much stronger varieties and are used in various constructions, these can be residential or commercial constructions. The actual strength of toughened glass is up to five times more than that of annealed glass, (see below for an explanation of the annealing process). Toughened glass is not only used for kitchen and bathroom splashbacks, it is also used to manufacture lots of glassware and these products are comparatively safer and offer far more durability.
Some people mistakenly believe that toughened glass is unbreakable, it may be very tough, but it can still be broken. Remember though, if products made of toughened glass are handled in the correct way, there is no reason why they shouldn't last for a lifetime.
