To help guide you through the process of deciding what type of splashback would best suit your home or office space, we have compiled some of the most frequently asked questions our customers have asked us over the years.
Why should I choose a glass splashback?
Glass is timeless! It has stood the test of time and always looks pristine if kept clean and smear free. Glass is also a very hygienic medium to live with, as the surface of the glass is impermeable, thus eliminating any hiding places for bacteria to collect and mould to form. Glass also comes in a wide range of surface textures, colours, gradients, patterns and can even have high resolution images added to create a totally unique piece of decor.
Can you cut splashbacks to size if you have a strange shape to cover?
Regardless of the shape of wall layout that requires covering, all our glass splashbacks are made to measure, ensuring the perfect fit, even accommodating corners, alcoves and electrical sockets seamlessly.
What colours do glass splashbacks come in?
The question here is more a case of what colour don't they come in? There is such a vast array of colours, patterns and images that can be incorporated into our quality glass splashbacks, that you really will be spoilt for choice. A Splashbacks of Distinction we offer a very wide variety of colours. We offer every RAL colour alongside any standard options from Dulux and Crown. We even provide a colour matching service to guarantee you get exactly the shade you were looking for.
What sort of patterns are in your glass splashbacks?
We do have some standard patterns, but we can add any pattern that you would like in your splashback. Some are random and colourful swirls, whereas others are more uniform and deliberate. Whatever you choose, we are certain that if we don't have the pattern to suit you, we will be able to develop one that does.
Can you install a glass splashback on tiles?
Tiles have probably been the most used surface material in kitchens and bathrooms over the years, but their use in areas where there is a high risk of splashing from cooking or washing can make them a real pain to clean. The grouting is particularly difficult to keep clean and often needs to be scraped out and replaced when it becomes discoloured. The replacing of tile grout is a laborious and time-consuming task and knowing that you may need to go through the same process again in the not-too-distant future, makes selecting a cleaner, more maintenance free alternative all the more attractive, this is where a glass splashback excels.
However, maybe you have some tiles that are particularly attractive or simply more in keeping with the decor of your home, adding a kitchen glass splashback over the existing tiles helps to protect them and make the area much easier to clean. Remember though that this will increase the depth of your walls slightly, so you may need to refit the existing electrical sockets. When attaching a glass splashback to a tiled wall, you will need to ensure that it is securely fixed to the wall and that the edges are completely sealed to prevent dirt getting in between the glass and the tiles.
Can a clear glass splashback be installed over paintwork or wallpaper?
This decorating solution appears to have become quite popular, particularly in homes where pets are kept. It is surprising just how much dirt ends up on the wallpaper or painted walls from dogs or cats, particularly if their beds are located next to the wall. A clear glass splashback is the perfect solution to protect the walls from scratching and an unwanted build-up of dirt and grime, not just from pets, but from the everyday wear and tear they can be subjected to.
Do you offer mirrored glass splashbacks?
Yes, we do offer mirrored splashbacks and they have proved to be a very popular choice amongst our customers. Having a glass splashback with a mirrored finish can make even the smallest kitchen or bathroom look much larger and brighter. Larger areas can also benefit from a mirrored finish too. For example, a long run of work surface can look really eye catching when reflected along its length or from one of the ends.
What happens if the glass splashback becomes scratched or chipped?
As our glass splashbacks are made from extremely durable toughened glass, which reduces the risk of chipping or scratching, extreme impact may damage them. Should the glass splashback become damaged, the splashback should be replaced, much like you would replace a car windscreen that has become damaged, as the chip or crack may become worse.
Are your glass splashbacks heat resistant?
All our toughened glass splashbacks are resistant to heat up to 350°C.
How do I get the right size glass splashback?
If you are confident with taking the measurements yourself, you can provide us with the exact measurements and fit your new glass splashbacks yourself. However, most of our clients opt for us to come out and measure up for them. This is certainly the case where a long run of splashback is required, or the splashback needs to negotiate complex shapes, alcoves and electrical sockets.
Is glass better than an acrylic splashback?
One has to remember that acrylic can be scratched very easily, whereas our incredibly durable toughened glass splashbacks are far more resistant to damage and scratches. The simple reason for this is that acrylic is a much softer material than glass.
Are glass splashbacks better than tiles?
The average ceramic tile will often be restricted the shape and size they have been manufactured in, whereas glass can be cut to meet any design you desire. Glass is also much easier to keep clean, as it has no porous grout lines to attract dirt, grime and bacteria, ensuring your bathroom and kitchen remains clean and attractive.
Are your glass splashbacks toughened?
All our splashbacks are made from the highest quality toughened glass. This ensures that they are incredibly durable and can withstand many years of service.
How thick are your glass splashbacks?
Our toughened glass splashbacks are a standard 6mm in thickness.
What about replacing a glass splashback?
Although our toughened glass splashbacks can last for many years and do not need to be replaced, you may wish to replace them for a different one or change the decor at some point. Should this be the case, then they can easily be removed from the wall without causing any significant damage.
How easy are splashbacks to maintain?
Our toughened glass splashbacks require very little maintenance. A quick wipe with a soft cloth and some mild detergent will keep them looking pristine for many years to come.
How do I go about buying a new splashback?
There are two ways to secure a shiny new splashback for your home of work place. The first would be to contact us and we can call to survey the area where the glass splashback is to be fitted. We take care of all the measurements before returning with your custom made splashback. The second way would be for customers to provide us with their measurements, their chosen design and fixing options and our expert team will create a quote for them. From there, they can simply purchase online, and the splashback will be delivered to their home for fitting. Either way you can choose to fit the splashback yourself, or ask us to fit it for you.
Can a glass splashback be added to a gas hob?
They can, as long as there is a good gap between your pots and pans and the glass surface. Continuous cycles of heating and cooling can cause issues with the glass, so the greater the distance between hob and glass splashback, the better.
The minimum distance from hob to a glass splashback?
When using a gas hob, the glass should be at least 3 inches from the edge of the flames to avoid the painted or printed splashback backing from burning. Similarly, hot pans should not directly touch the glass splashbacks for a prolonged period of time as the heat will be directly transferred to the glass and may cause the backing to burn.
How are glass splashbacks fitted?
Glass splashbacks are very easy to fit as long as they have been measured and cut correctly. The two main methods of securing a glass splashback to a surface. The first would be by using an adhesive and the second method uses traditional screw and rawl plug fixings. Adhesive is the most straightforward method and works best on perfectly flat surfaces, while screw fixings are better suited on rougher walls such as brickwork, where a smooth surface is impossible to achieve.
How are the splashbacks made?
All of our high quality glass splashbacks are made from superior toughened glass. This is a heat treatment that helps to increase the strength of the glass, ensuring that it is around five times tougher than normal glass. Should toughened glass face a significant impact, it will shatter into tiny blunt sections, reducing the risk of cuts from sharp shards of glass, much like a car windscreen.
Can you cut a glass splashback?
While toughened glass can be cut at home, it is not something that we would ordinarily recommend. Cutting too deep, too quickly will cause the glass to shatter, which is why we recommend that you entrust this skilled task to us. All of our glass splashbacks are made to measure, ensuring the perfect fit, so assuming you have given us exact measurements, the need for cutting should be eliminated anyway.
Are glass splashbacks expensive?
Owing to the fact that it is so easy to measure and fit a glass splashback, the cost to install a single cooker splashback is quite a lot cheaper than many other alternatives, as well as being quicker too. Why not get in touch? You'll be amazed at just how cost effective a glass splashback can be.
What about measurements for awkward shaped rooms?
This is not a problem, as we specialise in made-to-measure toughened glass splashbacks. Whatever shape of room you have, our glass splashbacks can be fashioned to fit perfectly.
Can an acrylic Splashback go behind a gas hob?
Acrylic is most certainly not suitable when situated behind a gas hob as the acrylic will easily melt. It is not recommended that you fit them behind any heat source for the same reason. Although induction hobs should be suitable, we would still suggest a glass splashback as they are far more durable and will not melt, scratch or discolour over time.
What about electrical sockets and light switches?
As no two rooms are the same, we have to recognise that light switches and sockets will be in all manner of different locations and will have to accommodate this when we measure up and fit the glass splashback. This is carried out before the toughening process is carried out. The cuts we use are precise and this gives your splashback a clean and professional fit as it sits behind your socket face.
Are your glass splashbacks really hygienic?
Because glass is non porous and super smooth, the splashbacks will be the cleanest surface in your kitchen. Even the glass splashbacks with a textured finish are super easy to keep hygienically clean with a quick wipe over with a clean paper towel and some anti-bacterial spray.
How are Glass Splashbacks made?
The glass is first cut to a little over the size ordered to allow for the reduction in size that occurs once the edges are polished to a neat bevelled edge.
The glass is then carefully and thoroughly washed to remove any grease and surface dirt before undergoing the toughening process. The toughening is carried out in a large furnace that heats the glass to almost melting point, before rapidly cooling it. The process of rapidly cooling the surface while the centre of the glass remains hot causes the surface to shrink. As the glass cools further, the centre begins to cool, thus also contracting. As the surface is already cooler than the middle it will now contract further which will cause the surface to develop compressive surface stresses. These compressive surface stresses make the glass around six times stronger than non-toughened glass.
Once the glass splashbacks have been cut, polished and toughened they are ready to be coated with your choice of colour or digitally printed images.
Can I use paint to on glass splashbacks?
Although we can't think of a good reason to want to paint a glass splashback once fitted, some people may want to. However, normal gloss and emulsion paint is totally unsuitable for glass splashbacks, and specialist paint must be used. This is why we would always recommend ordering the splashback from us pre-coated. If you choose to paint your own glass splashback with household paint it will start flaking off pretty quickly.
Where can I have a glass splashback?
The most common places for glass splashbacks are in the kitchen and bathroom, but they can go literally anywhere.
We have clients who want them to protect walls in entrance halls, living rooms, dining rooms and hobby rooms. A toughened glass splashback is a great way of stopping your walls from getting dirty, particularly if pets repeatedly rub or lay against them.
Many people want them as a topper for desks and are particularly sought after to protect the finish on antique wooden furniture.
Some even have then as a background for their wall mounted flat screen television. This is a rather clever way of reducing the accumulation of dust and dirt that electrical appliances such as televisions actually attract.
