A powder coated frame for when you want something different
There is little doubt that a gleaming mirror like metal frame can look amazing and compliment your new Juliet balcony. These can look just as stunning when paired with our glass balustrades to finish your decking area or patio, but what if you want something just a little bit different?
A recent client in Datchworth ordered a new Juliet balcony but didn't want stainless steel or a brushed steel look either. What they wanted was a very specific colour to perfectly match the door and window frames. At Splashbacks of Distinction we believe in giving the customer what they want whenever we can. If it's doable, it's done!
We sampled the colour of their window and door frames and matched it to the RAL colour and had that colour incorporated into a powder coating for the Juliet balcony frame. Our Datchworth client couldn't have been any happier.
A seamless finish to a new Juliet balcony
Matching the RAL colour or even having a contrasting colour created for the frame to your new Juliet balcony or glass balustrades can really make a world of difference. It takes you away from the ultra shiny stainless steel look and the more understated brushed metal effect, leaving you with truly bespoke and unique frames to enjoy for many years to come.
We used 40 x 40 tubing for the frame that was perfect for holding the large glass panel safely in place. The new frame gave an incredibly sleek and modern appeal to the rear of the Datchworth property.
Stand out from the crowd in Datchworth
Datchworth is a rather quaint little village, nestled between the towns of Hertford, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City. The buildings and residential properties are not known to be ultra modern, so our client's decision to have a powder coated frame for their Juliet balcony was a rather brave and radical departure from what was the norm in the village. Although different, the finished result looked amazing and didn't detract from the overall aesthetic of the house or the surrounding properties. It is fair to say that the powder coated Juliet balcony frame did stand out, but it did so in a good way. Other villagers have commented on how nice the finish is and we anticipate securing further work in this lovely little village in the near future.
A little about Datchworth
Sited on the Roman road from St Albans to Puckeridge, the village of Datchworth has examples of Saxon clearings in several locations. Datchworth has a very pleasant village green where there are two pubs, The Plough and The Tilbury and a sports club.
Where did the Datchworth name originate?
The name Datchworth is thought to originate from a Saxon lord called Daecca, this is pronounced Datcher, who settled here around the year 700 AD. The 'Worth' element of the village name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word worthig, which means enclosure. So, the name Datchworth simply means 'Daecca's enclosure'.
Datchworth was most certainly occupied well before 700 AD. There are two large Belgic sites, only one of which has been partly investigated. Much of the parish boundary still follows the old Belgic ditches.
The history of Datchworth
The arrival of the Normans gave Datchworth a written record in the Domesday Book. This included an account of the occupants and land values in the 11th century.
Standing at the eastern side of Datchworth Green is the whipping post. Its last recorded use was on 27 July 1665 when two 'vagabonds' were publicly flogged. Stocks stood near the post too, but there is no trace of them now. The stocks are thought to have been removed in 1899, however, there are stocks located close to All Saints' Church.
During the Second World War the last enemy-action incident of any kind on British soil occurred at 09:00 on 29 March 1945 when a V-1 flying bomb, colloquially known as the Doodlebug struck a nearby field in Woolmer Green. Another landed at Iwade in Kent, an hour later, after being hit by anti-aircraft fire.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint, which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light. The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as household appliances, aluminium extrusions, drum hardware, automobiles, and bicycle frames. Advancements in powder coating technology like UV-curable powder coatings allow for other materials such as plastics, composites, carbon fibre, and medium-density fibreboard to be powder coated, as little heat or oven dwell time is required to process them.
Advantages over other coating processes
Powder coatings contain no solvents and release little or no amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere. Thus, there is no need for finishers to buy costly pollution control equipment. Companies can comply more easily and economically with environmental regulations. We love the environmental benefits of powder coating at Splashbacks of Distinction.
Powder coatings can also produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without ugly runs or sagging of the applied coating.
Powder coated items generally have fewer appearance differences than liquid coated items between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces.
A wide range of speciality effects are easily accomplished using powder coatings that would be impossible to achieve with other coating processes. This makes powder coating our frames for Juliet balconies and glass balustrades so versatile.
Another attractive benefit of powder coating is that the curing time is significantly faster compared to liquid coatings especially when using ultraviolet cured powder coatings or advanced low bake thermosetting powders.

The ability to colour match or contrast with other parts of your property is a fantastic option, because although stainless steel and brushed finishes look awesome, they are not for everyone. Kitchen Splashback with Mirror Line, Newmarket
This splashback was painted in Ellis Ikon Azure. We also added a mirrored line through the splashbacks which is quite popular. The customer can choose the position and quantity of the lines and also the thickness so can avoid sockets etc.
LED Backlit Splashback, Royston
With a artistic design printed on the back of the glass very lightly, we are able to achieve the design without a light backing but also achieve illumination in various lights through the LED strips installed in a track behind the glass. With a colour wheel on the remote control for the LED Lights, the customer now has an unlimited choice of colours and brightness for his splashback.
Wine Room, Roydon
Working alongside Brandt Kitchens we installed the glass for this beautiful Wine Room in Roydon. By fitting the very large 10mm Glass Panels on the outside, we painted black borders around the glass to hide any hardware and give a nice edge to the glass. The glass works were then finished with matching Black Hinges and a Black Handle.
Frameless Balustrades and Juliet Balcony, Berkhamsted
We measured and installed these 17.5mm Laminated Float Glass Juliet Balcony and Balustrades early 2019. Sitting on chrome stand offs, the clean and modern look makes a massive difference to the rear of the property. Toughened and Laminated, these glass panels will be sure to stand the test of time.
With the balcony weighing in at 157kg and measuring over 3.5m wide, it was no easy task but the excellent fitting team here made it all possible.
