Here is a selection of completed work from Splashbacks of Distinction.
We all know what a balcony looks like, but more recently many homes and particularly modern flats or apartments are being fitted with something that is known as a Juliet balcony.
Juliet balconies do not protrude out of the building. It is usually part of an upper floor, with a balustrade only at the front, like a small Loggia. Modern Juliet balconies often involve a metal barrier placed in front of a high window which can be opened.
Most balconies are a raised platform usually above ground floor of a building, enabling the occupants to be outside the upper floor without leaving the actual property. Many apartments have them instead of a garden and they are often large enough to house a small patio set and some pot plants.
A Juliet balcony is different in that it has no base to walk on. They are generally for aesthetic purposes or even as a safety or security measure. The Juliet balcony often spans an exterior French door or pair of doors on an apartment building. They enable the doors to open inwards or even patio type doors to slide open, but prevent anyone falling out. They offer a means of getting plenty of fresh air into an otherwise enclosed area while eliminating the potential of a falling hazard.
Juliet balconies are named after the Shakespeare plays Juliet, who, in traditional stagings of the play Romeo and Juliet, is courted by Romeo while she is on her balcony. Having said that, the play itself, as written, makes no mention of a balcony at all, but only of a window at which Juliet appears. Various types of balcony have been used in depicting this famous scene; however the balcony of Juliet at Villa Capuleti in Verona is not a Juliet balcony at all, as it actually protrudes from the wall of the villa. The Julian Balcony is a slightly larger version of the Juliet Balcony, protruding slightly from the wall, unlike the smaller Juliet balcony, and spanning at least two windows rather than one.
