Kitchen splashbacks - purple

Purple is such a wonderfully regal colour to adorn any glass splashback. It has a rich, dark tone that glows brilliantly under diffused or direct lighting.

Purple is a colour intermediate between blue and red. It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral colour with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a secondary colour made by combining red and blue. The complementary colour of purple is yellow.

According to surveys in Europe and North America, purple is the colour most often associated with rarity, royalty, magic, mystery, and piety. When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.

Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy. Purple is most popular colour amongst women and girls, and is symbolic of the feminist movement and womens empowerment.

Anne Boleyn caused a storm in the Tudor court when she wore purple whilst still only the mistress of King Henry V111. Purple was considered to be the colour kept just for those of royal blood and as Henry was still married to Catherine of Aragon at the time, it was seen as very presumptuous of her.
