Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Glass creates an illusion of more space and allows outside features to become part of the interior design. With glass it is possible to link two different spaces together without the barrier of a wall giving you the ability to enjoy your home and garden throughout the year.

Our frameless systems create a contemporary design which safely maximises any view, allowing natural light to spread across the living space. This solution can be used for internal stairs, external balconies, or to act as windbreaks in exposed areas outdoors.

Balustrade posts provide a classic, yet still very popular, design choice. Manufactured using 2.6mm thick walled, 48mm stainless steel for superior strength. This high quality, external grade steel maximises durability and minimises maintenance.

Glass spigots create a modern, minimalist design choice which maximises your view. Glass spigots are a large glass floor clamp that secures the glass vertically. The individual 'feet' allow for natural drainage making it an ideal choice for external areas including patio, and decked gardens, as well as poolside areas.

We can supply samples to help you choose

We can supply samples to help you choose

It is often very difficult to see what a particular colour or finish will look like from a picture. We understand that and can supply samples of your chosen splash back to enable you to get the best possible idea of what your dream kitchen or bathroom will look like before it is fitted.

We already have hundreds of samples available to look at in our showroom including different types of finishes such as glitter or sparkle. We can supply a sample in any colour or finish you would like from our extensive range.

Our splash backs are often so vibrant that it is very difficult to really appreciate them from a simple image and with some finishes, such as the mirrored finishes, it is virtually impossible. With a sample you can get a much clearer idea of how your splash back will look in your kitchen and how it will compliment the other colours and textures around it.

A little about Flitwick

Flitwick is a small town and civil parish in Central Bedfordshire. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book as "a hamlet on the River Flitt". The nearby River Flit runs through Flitwick Moor, a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Flitwick is ten miles between Bedford and Luton. Flitwick shares many services with the neighbouring town of Ampthill, which lies just to the north. The boundary between the two towns is a watercourse called the Running Waters, which is now the route of the A507.

Flitwick Castle

Flitwick Castle was an 11th century castle and is located in Flitwick.

It was a small, timber Motte and bailey castle, surrounded by a moat. The castle was mentioned in the Domesday Book, in 1086, as being under the ownership of William Lovet, a Norman. Lovet had displaced Alwin, who had been the Saxon owner of Flitwick prior to the Norman Invasion.

The earthwork remains of the castle are on what is now a public green space known as Temple Field or Mount Hill. The ditches have been filled in and the mound is now about 20 feet high. The name Temple Field takes its name from the nearby church. The site is now a Scheduled Monument.

The Motte and bailey castles like the Flitwick castle

A motte and bailey castle is a European fortification with a wooden or stone keep situated on a raised area of ground called a motte, accompanied by a walled courtyard, or bailey, surrounded by a protective ditch and palisade. These were relatively easy to build with unskilled labour, but still effective from a militarily standpoint.

These castles were built across northern Europe from the 10th century onwards, spreading from Normandy and Anjou in France, into the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century. The Normans introduced the design into England and Wales following their invasion in 1066. Motte and bailey castles were adopted in Scotland, Ireland, the Low Countries and Denmark in the 12th and 13th centuries. Windsor Castle, in England, is an example of a motte and bailey castle. By the end of the 13th century, the design was largely superseded by alternative forms of fortification, but the earthworks remain a prominent feature in many countries.

Flitwick Manor

Flitwick Manor is a gorgeous Georgian country house in the south of Flitwick. It is located on Church Road off the A5120 road. Now operating as a hotel, the manor is a Grade II listed building. Now owned by Flitwick Town Council, much of the Grade II Register of Historic Parks and Gardens listed park is accessible to the public.

History of Flitwick Manor

Edward Blofield built Flitwick Manor in 1632. He died in 1663 and left the property to his wife Jane. In 1668 she married Samuel Rhodes and the Flitwick property passed through the Rhodes family until it was bequeathed in 1736 by Benjamin Rhodes to Humphry Dell who was a relative. Humphry Dell was a physician who practised in Flitwick. He was a friend of Jeffrey Fisher and acted as godfather to his daughter Anne who was born in 1757. When Dell died in 1764 he left Flitwick Manor to Anne Fisher, his goddaughter, but as she was only seven years old her father Jeffrey Fisher was the proprietor until she turned twenty-one. An engraving of Flitwick Manor was made during this time in 1776. Anne married James Hesse of Edmonton in 1778 but he died in 1783 and in 1789 she married George Brooks. Flitwick Manor then came into the possession of the Brooks family where it remained for the next 145 years.

Flitwick Manor architecture

The main part of the existing house at Flitwick Manor is the entrance block which dates from the early 18th century. It is two-storeys and is built of red brick. This block encases the earlier 17th century house and has a mansard roof below a parapet. The architectural style of Flitwick Manor is Georgian, in contrast to the garden frontage which is later and was undertaken in a Gothic Revival style. Charles O'Brien, in his 2014 revised Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Peterborough, in the Pevsner Buildings of England, series, identifies earlier work from the late 17th century and later, 19th and 20th century, extensions. Historic England dates the 20th century work on Flitwick Manor to 1936 and ascribes it to Sir Albert Richardson. Flitwick Manor is a Grade II listed building. The pleasure gardens surrounding Flitwick Manor were laid out by George and John Thomas Brooks in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were admired by their contemporaries, including Loudon. Much is now lost under 20th century housing developments. The park is listed Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. A grotto in the grounds of Flitwick Manor is listed Grade II.

Some ghostly goings on in Flitwick Manor

Flitwick Manor is reputed to be haunted, and these stories have sometimes been used for publicity since it became a hotel. Flitwick Manor was featured in the episode 'The Jim Twins/Flitwick Ghost' of the television series Strange but True? in 1995.

New top quality glass products in your Flitwick property

When it comes to replacing the balustrades in your home, Splashbacks of Distinction really are the company to call!

Most people think about a wooden baluster, which is also called a spindle or stair stick. These are usually lathe-turned form. The baluster is used to support the handrail on a flight of stairs or indeed any similar coping or parapet. When there are a number of balusters in a row, they form a balustrade.

Why not break away from the old fashioned wooden balustrade and opt for an ultra modern glass one. They're bright, clean and so easy to keep clean and sparkling.

Splashbacks of Distinction are available to visit your Flitwick home to measure up and fit a quality glass splashback or one of our other toughened glass products. Glass is such a clean and modern medium for your home and you'd be surprised just how much glass can transform your home. Unlike ceramic tiles, glass splashbacks come in a virtually infinite number of colour shades and are the easiest surface to keep hygienically clean.
