Our toughened glass balustrades, glass shelving and splashbacks with high resolution images have really caught the imagination of people who demand beauty and functionality in their homes and offices. A little Cambourne history

Cambourne is a relatively new settlement in Cambridgeshire. Christian church leaders expressed a particular interest in being involved in helping create the new community and this resulted in Cambourne church which is a cooperative effort between the Church of England, the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church. Although predominantly Christian, Hinduism is the second largest religion of the area.

As part of plans to build thousands of new homes in the south east of England, a new settlement on 400 hectares of former agricultural land, nine miles west of Cambridge, was considered in the late 1980s. In 1994, an agreement from the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 was completed by the developers, the local authority, Cambridgeshire County Council and the developers together with the landholders. The new settlement was to be constructed by three of Britains leading housebuilders, Bovis Homes, Bryant Homes and Taylor Wimpey. Planning permission for the development at Monkfield Park was given in November 1996, and construction began in June 1998, on what was previously farmland.

In 2008, work began on building Upper Cambourne, with an original estimated completion date of 2012. The existing planning permission allowed 3,300 homes in the development. On 3 October 2011, planning permission was granted for a further 950 homes. This was set to take building work up to approximately 2016, and complete Upper Cambourne. In January 2017 outline planning consent was granted for a further 2,350 homes to the west of Lower Cambourne.

Cambourne was initially going to be named Monkfield after the name of the original farm, which is commemorated by a Monkfield Lane in Great Cambourne and the village pub, The Monkfield Arms. However, the name of the community was eventually created from the names of Cambridge, the nearest city, and Bourn, a nearby village.

The South Cambridgeshire (Parishes) Order 2004 created the new civil parish of Cambourne from 1 April 2004 and changed the boundaries of the Bourn parish.

A little Cambourne history

To help accomodate an ever increasing population, Cambourne, like many other newly developed areas is a relatively new settlement in Cambridgeshire when compared to other more historic areas of the county.

Planning permission for the development at Monkfield Park was given in November 1996, and construction began in June 1998, on what was previously farmland. The result was Cambourne, with a good mix of new properties from affordable starter homes through to more executive properties.

Cambourne: What's in a name?

Cambourne was initially going to be named Monkfield after the name of the original farm from the area, which is commemorated by a Monkfield Lane in Great Cambourne and the village pub, The Monkfield Arms. However, the name of the community was eventually created from the names of Cambridge, the nearest city, and Bourn, a nearby village.

Archaeological finds in Cambourne

Although Cmbourne is quite a new settlement, excavations were carried out within the Cambourne area which gave researchers a better idea about the areas historical occupation.

Situated on the clay uplands just to the west of Cambridge, which had seen very little previous archaeological investigation, the results were quite significant in demonstrating the rise and fall of occupation in the area according to population or agricultural requirements.

Although quite short in time, Bronze Age occupation was followed in the Middle Iron Age by rather small farming communities with an economy based on animals and crop growing. The Late Iron Age seems to have seen a significant reduction in the area, propbably owing to an increase in ground water, making farming less more difficult.

From the middle of the first century AD new settlements began to spring up, partly because of the proximity of Ermine Street, and within a hundred years the area was quite densely occupied. Several farmsteads were remodelled in the later Romano-British period, though none seem to have been very successful.

These farms that had been occupied for more than a thousand years were still used after the Romans left Britain in the early 5th century. By the 9th century, the landscape was changing and people across Britain were beginning to move from isolated settlements into villages; to places like Caxton in the case of people living on the Cambourne site.

Settlements replaced by farmland

With the local population dispersing, a trend that may have continued into the early 5th century at least, followed by a break until the 12th or 13th century, when the entire area was taken into arable cultivation, leaving the usual traces of medieval ridge and furrow agriculture.

The poughs used by the people tending the land sadly destroyed almost all the archaeological evidence in the area, so the exact history of this area during that period is unclear, but it is likely that the land had been turned into regular strip fields where villagers would grew their crops. This continued until the land was enclosed and farmed privately in the first half of the 19th century and farmhouses were built.
