A little Dry Drayton history

Dry Drayton is a village about 5 miles from Cambridge in Cambridgeshir. Dry Drayton was listed as Draitone in the Domesday Book in 1086 and covers an area of 2,049 acres.

The ancient parish of Dry Drayton formed between the Roman Via Devana, which is now the A14. Via Devana is the name given to a Roman Road in England that ran from Colchester in the south east, through Cambridge to the north, and the Cambridge to St Neots road to the south, covering an area of 2421 acres. In 1966 around 350 acres were removed from the north west of the parish to create the new civil parish of Bar Hill. Now completely cleared of ancient woodland, the village has been used for arable farming for centuries.

Listed as Draitone in the Domesday Book, the village became known as Dry Drayton by the start of the 13th century to distinguish it from Fen Drayton, which is just 5 miles away and the fact that it was susceptible to times of drought. The name Drayton means farmstead where drays or sledges are used.

Dry Drayton has one remaining public house, The Black Horse, that opened around 1780. Former pubs include the Three Horseshoes, that opened in the mid 18th century and closed in the mid 20th century. Away from the village was the Five Bells, that opened in the early 19th century where the Oakington road met the Huntingdon turnpike, which is now now the A14. It became a farmhouse in the first decades of the 20th century.

A new showroom to inspire you in Cambridge

These days when you want to make changes around your home and office, many will look to the internet for this inspiration. This is simply the modern equivalent to trawling through endless interior design magazines, just cheaper and more accessible.

Indeed, one can browse our website and see many examples of how fantastic our glass products really are. There are countless photographs in the various gallery entries there for you to look through, but physically seeing the products in person is another level of service that we believe our customers will truly benefit from.

Visiting our Cambridge show room is the perfect way to see and feel the beauty and functionality of our glass products. Actually seeing just how vibrant the colours of our glass splashbacks are and how stunning our glass shelvings systems can make your ornaments look is the best way to determine just what you want and where you want it in your home and office.

It may simply be a glass shelf or two, a toughened glass splashback for the kitchen or bathroom, or it could be glass balustrades to replace those traditional wooden spindles on the stairs.

Glass for inside and out

We will have samples of many of our toughened glass products on display in the Cambridge show room and the majority will be suited for the interior of your property. However, with Juliet balconies and toughened glass balustrades, the great outdoors can benefit from the wonder of glass too.

Glass balustrades can look simply amazing surrounding a decked area in the garden, or as a divider between a lawned area and the patio. Our most frequently requested application for them is for a terrace. Natural light can flood through them with ease and they will not obscure your view of the garden either.

The Juliet balcony is another favourite. Particularly attractive when fitted outside floor to ceiling windows or French doors situated on an upper floor. Just another great way to incorporate a superior glass product into your life.

So with a mere five miles from our Cambridge show room, why not pay us a visit and view some of what we have to offer. Our friendly and helpful staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
