A little Harston history

In the Domesday Book Harston is listed under the hundred of Thriplow, and had only twenty nine households.

Harston House is a historic private house in Harston. It was formerly known as Harston Hall. It is a grade II listed building.

Although the main building is seventeenth century, parts of its structure date back to at least 1480 Roman tiles have been found in the grounds and in the foundations of Harston House, supporting a tradition that a property has stood on this land ever since Roman times. The house is noteworthy for its distinctive features of English architecture, including its original Tudor fireplace, original fine wooden panelling from the seventeenth century and its rare pilasters made of clunch. Clunch is a traditional building material of chalky limestone rock used mainly in eastern England and Normandy. Clunch distinguishes itself from archetypal forms of limestone by being softer in character when cut, such as resembling chalk in lower density, or with minor clay like components.

This house is not to be confused with Harston House student accommodation at Addenbrookes hospital.

The village of Harston is situated just five miles from Cambridge, in the valley of the Cam or Rhee, so you will be easy striking distance to our new glass splashback show room in Cambridge.

The name of the Harston has evolved from several different spellings, the closest to the current spelling is Hares-town; this and the surrounding villages of Fox-town and Hawkestown, are believed to have taken their names from the past time of the nobility, in particular, Queen Elizabeth I who used the area as one of her hunting grounds.

There is quite a bit of archeological evidence to suggest that Harston is of Saxon origin, however Roman as well as Saxon pottery has been found in the surrounding area.

Harston has been described as one long street, although recent building developments have changed this. Harston was always busy with people travelling from Cambridge to London and the inns catered for passengers and traders of all kinds. One of the oldest inns, the Coach and Horses is possibly a 16th century house, and was recorded in 1800. It is now a private dwelling.

On the High Street, stands a public house called the Old English Gentleman, which was newly built in 1839 and named for the rector of Fowlmere: at the opposite end of the street, near the war memorial, is the Pemberton Arms built around 1865. In between these two points you will find the village stores and post office, an antique shop, garages and car showrooms.

Not far from the village is where in 1645 that a force of King Charles cavalry attempted to fight their way across the river Rhee. An intense battle ensued and the crossing was held by Oliver Cromwells men. The site is known as The Red Field. The watermill in the vicinity dates from 1086. In the 1960s it was bought by an animal feed company and it has now undergone an transformation to become the headquarters of a scientific company.
