Tilbury is a town in the borough of Thurrock, Essex, England. It was established in the late nineteenth century, on land that was mainly part of Chadwell St Mary. It contains a 16th century fort and an ancient cross river ferry. Tilbury has a major deep-water port which contributes to the local economy.

Some Tilbury history

Before the railway arrived in Tilbury in 1854, there were not many people living in the Tilbury area. Following the arrival of the railway, some railway workers began to live in the area. But it was the building of the now world famous docks, completed in 1886, that really saw the growth and importance of Tilbury.

In 1912, the growth of the amount of people living in the Tilbury area was recognised by the establishment of Tilbury as an urban district. The newly Tilbury council began a programme of house building that continued well into the 1920s, although this building scheme was arrested for a while owing to the First World War.

Tilbury had a particularly tough time during the depression of the 1930s. The Tilbury Distress Committee reported at Christmas 1931 that nine hundred families were teetering on the brink of starvation. An emergency soup kitchen was established on Calcutta Road to feed those affected by the extreme poverty.

By the time the year 1936 arrived, the Tilbury Urban District Council was merged with other local authorities to form the Thurrock Urban District.

War had yet another unwanted impact on Tilbury during the Second World War because Tilbury was an important target for German bombing raids. A great deal of houses were lost as was the Tilbury Hotel. Tilbury Town station was hit by a V2 rocket, the far more powerful and silent successor to the noisy V1 flying bomb, often referred to as the doodlebug. However, Tilbury played a major part in D-day, both as a embarkation point and also in the construction of the PLUTO pipeline and the Mulberry harbours.

In 1953, a tidal surge resulted in a huge amount of flooding on either side of the North Sea. 2,500 homes in Tilbury were flooded, and 1,300 people were evacuated from the area for their own safety.
