Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Glass creates an illusion of more space and allows outside features to become part of the interior design. With glass it is possible to link two different spaces together without the barrier of a wall giving you the ability to enjoy your home and garden throughout the year.

Our frameless systems create a contemporary design which safely maximises any view, allowing natural light to spread across the living space. This solution can be used for internal stairs, external balconies, or to act as windbreaks in exposed areas outdoors.

Balustrade posts provide a classic, yet still very popular, design choice. Manufactured using 2.6mm thick walled, 48mm stainless steel for superior strength. This high quality, external grade steel maximises durability and minimises maintenance.

Glass spigots create a modern, minimalist design choice which maximises your view. Glass spigots are a large glass floor clamp that secures the glass vertically. The individual 'feet' allow for natural drainage making it an ideal choice for external areas including patio, and decked gardens, as well as poolside areas.

Letchworth Garden City was the first of its kind

Letchworth Garden City is the world's first Garden City, created as a solution to the squalor and poverty of urban life in Britain in the late 19th Century.

Based on the ideas of Ebenezer Howard as published in his book of 1898 Tomorrow: A Peaceful Path to Reform, Letchworth Garden City inspired town planning across the planet.

In 1962, an Act of Parliament transferred the assets, role and responsibilities of First Garden City Ltd to a public sector organisation - Letchworth Garden City Corporation. Thirty three years later, a further Act of Parliament wound up the Corporation passing the £56 million Estate to Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.

Today, the Foundation works to maintain and enhance the world's first Garden City, managing our local property portfolio to generate income, which we then invest back into the community and landscape of Letchworth Garden City.

Pub life in Letchworth Garden City

Letchworth Garden City was known as a temperance town when it was first built. In short, Letchworth Garden City was tee total from the outset.

Letchworth Garden City was based on the principles of social reformer Ebenezer Howard and was intended to be a new kind of town, setting out to combine the advantages of cities and the countryside while eliminating their disadvantages. Letchworth Garden City had a strong Quaker influence, hence the lack of drinking establishments.

Howard wanted to offer working people living in overcrowded cities a better standard of living in sturdy homes with low rents and low taxes. He advocated zoning, by keeping industry separate from residential areas, as well as ensuring there were plenty of trees and open spaces. And pubs serving alcohol were banned from the new town, although historic ones on the boundary of the new development remained, which meant its ideas struck a chord with the Quakers. This position wasn't reversed until a referendum of residents in 1958.

Today, Letchworth's licensed drinking establishments are there for all to see as soon as you get off the train from London. The Colonnade, with its popular disco became a magnet for the younger generation of Letchworth Garden City.

Not far from here in Leys Avenue, the Wetherspoons is always bust at the weekends. Given its temperance roots, pubs have been created in buildings that previously had other uses. The Wetherspoons is housed in a converted 1920s shop building for example, while a fine ale-serving pub called The Arena Tavern can be found in an old parade of shops.

While Howard had laid out the philosophy for Letchworth, he didn't actually design it. It became a reality in September 1903 when a company called the First Garden City Ltd was created and architects Barry Parker and Raymond Urwin were appointed following a competition. Initially some 3826 acres of Hertfordshire countryside was purchased at a cost of £160, 378, but Letchworth Garden City was later expanded.

Letchworth Garden City was showcased in two experimental housing exhibitions in 1905 and 1907 which together attracted some 60,000 visitors, many of whom arrived on special excursions run by the railway companies. The properties that participated in the Cheap Cottages Exhibitions can still be seen today and they can be identified by their commemorative plaques.

But while some admired Letchworth Garden City and its founders' attempts to create better lives for inhabitants, others laughed at the concept and Letchworth Garden City became a popular subject for cartoonists to target. George Orwell, referred to the town in his Road to Wigan Pier book as the place where "every fruit juice drinker, nudist, sandal wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, nature cure-quack, pacifist and feminist in England" could be found.

The fact that Letchworth had a pub called the Skittles Inn, that wasn't licensed to serve alcohol created a great deal of ridicule. Opened in 1907, it became known as the "pub with no beer" and offered "fellowship, rest and recreation" for workers, with non-alcoholic drinks such as a non-alcoholic apple wine, Drinking Chocolate, Tea and Sarsaparilla served at the bar.

The first roundabout in Letchworth Garden City

Visitors to the world's first Garden City may find much to amaze them - from its beautiful tree-lined streets to its unique and fascinating buildings, but many are most amazed by a small unassuming circular traffic island, with a little wooden sign which proudly proclaims it as 'UK's First Roundabout Built circa 1909'.

In the original town plan of Letchworth Garden City drawn up in 1904 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, there was a point which dissected 3 roads - Sollershotts East and West, Broadway, and Spring Road. At the point at which they all converged, Parker and Unwin drew up a detailed plan of a circular traffic island, 'Sollershott Circus', in July 1908.

There is some debate as to whether the first roundabout in the World was the Place d'Etoile, the one that goes around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, built in 1907, or Manhattan's only roundabout, Columbus Circle, which opened in 1905. The latter bore no resemblance to a modern-day roundabout at all, with motorists not required to slow down or give way on entering it, making it more of a traffic circle than a true roundabout as we recognise them today.

The Letchworth Garden City roundabout, Sollershott Circus was at least partly influenced by the aforementioned Place d'Etoile, which Unwin referred to in a 1909 speech to the RIBA. In the Letchworth Garden City development plans, the roundabout is shown in white on the summer 1908 development plan, and in yellow on the spring 1910 development plan. The former plan was drafted before it was built, with the yellow one following its completion.

Today the famed Letchworth Garden City roundabout sits on Broadway's tree-lined boulevard, its sign commemorating the innovative pioneer spirit which defined Letchworth Garden City then as now.

This historic roundabout would make a splendid and unique addition to any glass splashback. Not only is the Letchworth Garden City roundabout historically important, but the tree lined boulevard lends itself to a rather picturesque backdrop for an artistic shot to be incorporated into a new toughened glass splashback.

Whether you want a new splashback for the kitchen, or a more artistic one to adorn the walls of your living room, why not drop Splashbacks of Distinction a line to discuss your own specific requirements?
