Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Adding class to glass with our glass balustrades

Glass creates an illusion of more space and allows outside features to become part of the interior design. With glass it is possible to link two different spaces together without the barrier of a wall giving you the ability to enjoy your home and garden throughout the year.

Our frameless systems create a contemporary design which safely maximises any view, allowing natural light to spread across the living space. This solution can be used for internal stairs, external balconies, or to act as windbreaks in exposed areas outdoors.

Balustrade posts provide a classic, yet still very popular, design choice. Manufactured using 2.6mm thick walled, 48mm stainless steel for superior strength. This high quality, external grade steel maximises durability and minimises maintenance.

Glass spigots create a modern, minimalist design choice which maximises your view. Glass spigots are a large glass floor clamp that secures the glass vertically. The individual 'feet' allow for natural drainage making it an ideal choice for external areas including patio, and decked gardens, as well as poolside areas.

We can supply samples to help you choose

We can supply samples to help you choose

It is often very difficult to see what a particular colour or finish will look like from a picture. We understand that and can supply samples of your chosen splash back to enable you to get the best possible idea of what your dream kitchen or bathroom will look like before it is fitted.

We already have hundreds of samples available to look at in our showroom including different types of finishes such as glitter or sparkle. We can supply a sample in any colour or finish you would like from our extensive range.

Our splash backs are often so vibrant that it is very difficult to really appreciate them from a simple image and with some finishes, such as the mirrored finishes, it is virtually impossible. With a sample you can get a much clearer idea of how your splash back will look in your kitchen and how it will compliment the other colours and textures around it.

Everything glass in Welwyn Garden City

Welwyn Garden City is a relatively modern town. It is set in Hertfordshire close to the town of Hatfield and Welwyn village. Welwyn Garden City is a very popular town for commuters to settle in as it is very close to the A1(M) and a direct Kings Cross main rail line, making the capital just a short journey away.

Owing to the number of commuters living in Welwyn Garden City, there is an above average amount of wealth there; meaning property prices are quite high. The residents of Welwyn Garden City take a great pride in their properties and although some were built in the late 1920's and 1930's, they are very keen to keep them looking very modern inside.

Splashbacks of Distinction have worked on many properties in Welwyn Garden City over the years. We have fitted countless kitchen splashbacks a good number of bespoke shower cubicles or screens and quite a few toughened glass balustrades. It is fair to say that the residents of Welwyn Garden City are regular customers of us here at Splashbacks of Distinction.

A rapid expansion in Welwyn Garden City

Welwyn Garden City had seen a rapid growth on old industrial sites throughout the town in recent years. Although not always popular with existing residents, the new modern apartment buildings that have sprung up along Broadwater road and similar routes, they do lend themselves to enhancement with modern glass products very easily.

Our Juliet balconies have become a major hit with those who choose apartment living. They enable them to open up their windows or doors with complete safety, which is not a small consideration when you live more than a floor or three above the ground.

How did Welwyn Garden City come about?

Welwyn Garden City was founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in 1920 following his previous experiment in Letchworth Garden City, which is just a few miles north of Welwyn Garden City. Howard had called for the creation of planned towns that were to combine the benefits of the city and the countryside and to avoid the disadvantages of both. It was designed to be 'The Perfect Town'. The Garden Cities and Town Planning Association had defined a garden city as "a town designed for healthy living and industry of a size that makes possible a full measure of social life but not larger, surrounded by a rural belt; the whole of the land being in public ownership, or held in trust for the community."

In 1919, Howard arranged for the purchase of land in Hertfordshire that had already been identified as a suitable site. A company called Second Garden City Limited was formed in October 1919 to start buying the land and developing the town. On 4 February 1920 the company's board decided to call the new garden city Digswell, taking the name of the existing small village which would be surrounded by the development. Six days later they changed their minds, deciding instead to call it Welwyn Garden City, reflecting that the project was already being discussed generally as the "new garden city near Welwyn". On 29 April 1920 the company changed its name to become Welwyn Garden City Limited. Sir Theodore Chambers chaired the company, whilst Louis de Soissons was appointed as architect and town planner, Charles Purdom as finance director and Frederic Osborn as secretary. The first house was occupied just before Christmas 1920.

Today in Welwyn Garden City, you can see the Howard centre in the middle of town, named after Ebenezer Howard, De Soissons Close is named after Louis, and the Ridgeway Secondary School was formerly the Sir Frederick Osborn School.

The local population of Welwyn Village do tend to jealously guard their distinct village identity, with some becoming quite animated should their village be referred to as Welwyn Garden City.

Welwyn Garden City is beautifully designed

Welwyn Garden City is laid out along tree-lined boulevards with a neo-Georgian town centre. It has its own environmental protection legislation, the Scheme of Management for Welwyn Garden City. Every road has a wide grass verge. The spine of the town is Parkway, a central mall or scenic parkway, almost a mile long. The view along Parkway to the south was once described as one of the world's finest urban vistas. Older houses are on the west side of Parkway and newer houses on the east side.

The original planners intended that all the residents of the garden city would shop in one shop and created the Welwyn Stores, a monopoly which caused some local resentment. Commercial pressures have since ensured much more competition and variety, and the Welwyn Stores were in 1984 taken over by the John Lewis Partnership.

In 1948, Welwyn Garden City was designated a new town under the New Towns Act 1946 and the Welwyn Garden City Company handed its assets to the Welwyn Garden City Development Corporation. Louis de Soissons remained as its planning consultant. That year The Times compared Welwyn Garden City with Hatfield. It described Welwyn Garden City as a world-famous modern new town developed as an experiment in community planning and Hatfield as an unplanned settlement created by sporadic building in the open country. Welwyn Garden City, though far from perfect, made the New Towns Act possible, just as Hatfield, by its imperfection, made it necessary. In 1966, the Development Corporation was wound up and handed over to the Commission for New Towns. The housing stock, neighbourhood shopping and green spaces were passed to Welwyn Hatfield District Council between 1978 and 1983.

No streets in Welwyn Garden City

A little known fact is that Welwyn Garden City has no streets, well, almost! Until 2005, none of the roads in Welwyn Garden City had the inclusion of the word 'street'. Leyton Street was the first owing to a simple oversight. There are roads, closes and greens, with many roads simple having a name without a specific classification. Leyton Street is now simply referred to as Leyton to comply with the street less tradition of Welwyn Garden City.

A smaller hospital for Welwyn Garden City

The New QEII Hospital, completed in June 2015, offers outpatient, diagnostic and ante/postnatal services. The original one was demolished and central healthcare services have been moved from Welwyn Garden City to the Lister hospital in Stevenage, much to the disgust of local residents.

Currently, Hertfordshire Constabulary are having their Welwyn Garden City Headquarters rebuilt on the same site. The only building to survive is the modern Force Operations Room.

A shopping mall sits in the middle of Welwyn Garden City, the Howard Centre, was built in the 1980s, incorporating a replacement for the original railway station.

There is a resurgence of interest in the ethos of the garden city and the type of neighbourhood and community advocated by Howard, prompted by the problems of metropolitan and regional development and the importance of sustainability in government policy.

Roman history in Welwyn Garden City

On the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City, the Welwyn Roman baths are preserved in a steel vault underneath junction 6 of the A1 (M) and are open to visitors. Many visitors' book tours every year and local schools often have History trips to the Welwyn Garden City historical attraction.

The local civic society, which aims to preserve and conserve the garden city ethos, is the Welwyn Garden City Society.

2020 saw the 100th anniversary for Welwyn Garden City with a series of celebrations planned. They could not all be done amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

Welwyn Garden City really is a beautiful town and it has some gorgeous properties. There are some rather affluent areas, particularly on the west side of the town and these properties have some wonderful kitchens, living areas and bathrooms. Glass splashbacks, glass worktops and decorative glass panels can look stunning and really set off a room beautifully. Splashbacks of Distinction will be happy to call round and advise you on the type of glass splashback that will best suit your existing home decor.
